PAX '08

Just got back from PAX. Had a great time. Thought I'd note some of the things that I did/saw before I forgot, then afterwards I'll talk about my overall experience/impressions.

1. Lots of free swag. Even more than last year. That might have been because I was more aggressive this year with trying to get free stuff than last year. I even got Serra Angel print from my aggressive strategy. Although afterwards I kept asking for free MTG cards. Which, I probaby did cross a line there as this one Wizards guy pointed out ("Dude!?!"). I later realized that they were passing out older cards. If I knew that I wouldn't have asked for any because I already have a lot of older cards. The only time where I went "wow I probably shouldn't have gone that far" was during that MTG event. At least I didn't steal anything that actually cost money. My morals may be questionable at times, but stealing is bad in my book.

2. Got to see a lot of people from Bungie. Quite a few I didn't reconize but I saw Brian Jarrard, Luke Smith, Shiska, Marty O'Donnell, and Jerome. I thought I might have seen Lars Bakkan, but looking back I think I was mistaken.

3. Got to see some developers from Dead Space, City of Heroes. Saw Tom Fulp and Dan Paladin from Newgrounds.

4. Saw some 1up people. Or "ex-1up" as they put it. Not sure what's all happened.

5. Got to see Spore in action. Game looks awesome.

6. Saw the PAX Family Fued. It was hilarious. One of the things was "what people do when their electricity goes out." This one guy said "I like to masturbate." Everyone started laughing. Then the answer "pleasure yourself" came up and people laughed again.

7. I got a hug from this one chick. And this other chick that was giving people stickers took the sticker off before giving it to me and put it on my chest.

Ok now for my overall experiance. PAX is a fun place to just look at the games and get free stuff and hang out with people. If I went alone I don't think I would have enjoyed myself nearly as much. Part of the fun was hanging out with friends for 4 days. Videos, demos, all sorts of good stuff. Game free-plays are cool too.

But what's bad about PAX? Well quite simply, it's too popular. There are lines for about everything. The new games in particular (like Left 4 Dead and Gears of War 2) had huge lines. I wanted to partake in the Bungie events but whenever one was going on there would be a huge crowd gathered around. Even the restaurants had lines. Heck you had to wait like 15 minutes or more just to get food. They really either need to close registration at a certain point or get more room.

Will I want to go next time? Sure. Hopefully by then I'll have money to actually buy some things.
